Professor Xinheng Wang
Artificial intelligence in healthcare and manufacturing
Xinheng Wang (M04SM14) received the B.E. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Xian Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China, in 1991 and 1994, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Brunel University, Uxbridge, U.K., in 2001. He is currently a Professor with the School of Advanced Technology and was the founding Head of Department of Mechatronics and Robotics, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou 215123, China. Prior to joining XJTLU, he was a professor with different universities in the UK.
He has been an Investigator or Co-Investigator of nearly 30 research projects sponsored from EU, UK EPSRC, Innovate UK, China NSFC, and industry. He has authored or coauthored 200+ referred papers. He holds 15 granted patents, including 1 US, 1 Japan, 4 South Korea and 9 China patents. He was one of the key developers of the world’s first smart trolley to provide intelligent services to passengers at airports. His current research interests include intelligent manufacturing and healthcare. In intelligent manufacturing, he is investigating a system dubbed as VisionTwin to integrate industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), edge computing, machine vision, digital twin, and artificial intelligence to promote the intelligence of manufacturing. In healthcare, he has led a team to develop a novel application of diagnosing COVID-19 on smartphones by monitoring users' breathing. In addition, he is investigating technologies for motion and posture detection of users indoors by acoustic analysis on smartphones.
In this speech, two cases studied are used to demonstrate the application of artificial intelligence (AI). One is the diagnosis of COVID-19 on smartphones by monitoring breathing. Acoustic analysis and artificial intelligence enable the diagnosis very successful. The second case study is the application of artificial intelligence to promote the intelligence in manufacturing and industry. Machine vision is the eye of automation, it is widely applied in industry for product inspection. Artificial intelligence algorithms including deep learning networks are key technologies to process the images. However, for new applications, or the application environments have been changed, the algorithms need to be trained again. The training of the algorithms requires data? How to find data is a main challenge in applying AI algorithms. Through 2nd case study, it demonstrates how to use integrated technologies such as mobile edge computing, digital twin, and Internet of Things to generate data for AI algorithms to be applied in possibly any scenario.
